Essential Steps for Students Moving to Munich: A Complete Guide
Moving to a new country can be overwhelming, but with the right plan, you can settle in smoothly! Follow this checklist to complete all the essential steps for student life in Germany.
✅ Inspect Your Accommodation
Upon arrival, check your apartment carefully and document any damages in the Handover Protocol provided by your landlord. This will help you avoid issues when moving out.
✅ Get Private Liability Insurance
Before moving in, apply for private liability insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung) to cover any accidental damages you may cause.
✅ Register Your Address (Anmeldung)
Visit your local Bürgerbüro or KVR (if you’re in Munich) to complete your address registration (Anmeldung). This document is required for many official processes!
✅ Apply for Student Health Insurance
• Students under 30 years old must apply for public health insurance (e.g., TK, AOK, Barmer).
• Students over 30 years old must apply for private health insurance.
• Exception: Students from the EU or countries with a health insurance agreement with Germany.
✅ Open a German Bank Account (Girokonto)
Most German banks offer student accounts. A great option is Stadtsparkasse München (Barerstraße 41, 80799 München).
Alternatively, you can open a German account with Revolut, perfect for students and international transfers. Sign up through link and enjoy exclusive benefits!
✅ Unblock Your Blocked Account
Send your IBAN number to your blocked account provider to start receiving your monthly withdrawals.
✅ Register for the Public TV/Radio Tax (Rundfunkbeitrag)
All residents in Germany must pay the Rundfunkbeitrag (about €18.36/month). Register here.
💡 If your flatmate already pays, you can deregister by selecting “Ich ziehe zu einem anderen Beitragszahler”.
✅ Get the Discounted Deutschland Ticket (€38)
Students can apply for a discounted public transport ticket. Register on the MVG website and upload your student enrollment certificate (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung).
✅ Apply for Your Student Residence Permit
At least 3 months before your visa expires, apply for a student residence permit to continue your studies in Germany.
💳 Want a German bank account without visiting a bank? Open a Revolut account through link and get special bonuses!
